The Importance of Staying Active while Dealing with Cancer

Exercise cancer care port moody health

The importance of staying active while dealing with cancer – no matter how advanced the disease may be:

A recent study presented at the American Society of Clinical Oncology’s annual Gastrointestinal Cancer’s Symposium, found that just 30 minutes of daily moderate-intensity activity is improves survival by 19% in metastatic colorectal cancer. Five or more hours of moderate activity per week had even more benefit – up to 25%.

Even activity such as walking, cleaning or gardening counts as “moderate exercise”. The researchers also found that 30 minutes of daily moderate activity also slowed the spread of the disease. Although not a substitute for chemotherapy or other cancer treatments, staying active during cancer treatment, even a small amount everyday, has measurable benefit on survival and disease progression.
