WHAT IS ELECTROACUPUNCTURE?

Electro-acupuncture is the use of an electric current to augment standard acupuncture and stimulate qi (energy). It is a well tolerated treatment, that is offered at Port Moody Health. There are a variety of applications for electro-acupuncture in addition to osteoarthritis, including chemo-induced nausea, menstrual pain, menstrual irregularities, headache and musculoskeletal pain.

ELECTROACUPUNCTURE

Osteoarthritis is a degenerative joint disease that is characterized by breakdown of cartilage and bone, leading to pain, stiffness and a decreased quality of life. In a recent study on patients with osteoarthritis of the knee, electro-acupuncture was shown to decrease pain and improve function significantly when compared to sham (placebo) acupuncture. Patients were treated with electro-acupuncture three times a week for an 8 week duration. Side effects were minimal and the most notable reaction was bruising following treatment, which was resolved shortly after.
