TRIGGER POINT INJECTION THERAPY

Trigger Point Injection Therapy was originally developed in Germany for the safe and effective treatment of a variety of health conditions and has been widely used in Europe since the 1940’s. In the treatment of pain, trigger point injections are used to release tense areas of muscle and fascia (often felt to the patient as deep “knot”), to restore the flow of blood, oxygen and nerve conduction in the local area and distant regions affected by the proximal trigger point.

WHAT PAIN CONDITIONS CAN BE TREATED BY TRIGGER POINT INJECTIONS?

Conditions such as joint dysfunction, back and neck pain, acute and chronic headaches, acute migraines, dizziness, vertigo (if the cause is a lack of blood flow due to trigger points in the neck), knee pain, frozen shoulder (adhesive capsulitis), tennis elbow (epicondylitis), IT (ilio-tibial) band dysfunction, sacroilitis and fibromyalgia can all benefit from trigger point injection therapy. During prolotherapy sessions, trigger point injection therapy is often integrated as part of the care in order to restore functional musculoskeletal coordination and balance.

WHAT IS INJECTED INTO THE TRIGGER POINTS?

The treatment involves injection of a mild anesthetic solution known as procaine. Sterile homeopathic medicines (i.e. Traumeel) may also be added to the injection as part of the specific treatment.

HOW MANY TRIGGER POINT INJECTION THERAPY TREATMENTS ARE REQUIRED?

The number of treatments varies depending on the type and chronicity of the condition. For instance, in acute headache and migraine often 1 session is enough. For frozen shoulder, usually 6-8 treatments are needed. Depending on the condition, other therapies may be recommended for complete resolution of the problem, such as prolotherapy, massage therapy, physiotherapy, chiropractic care or low-level laser therapy.
