PRP FOR ACNE

WHAT IS ACNE?

Acne happens when the body over produces sebum (a natural oil that your skin secretes to protect itself from drying out). This can happen for a number of reasons such as medications and hormone imbalances.

Acne occurs when the pores and minute hair follicles in our skin become blocked and inflamed by the sebum, dead skin cells and bacteria. The result being acne (blackheads, whiteheads, pimples and cysts). Once this begins to settle it can cause hyper-pigmentation of the skin along with marks and scars. Serve acne such as cystic acne can damage the dermis and lower layers of the skin, causing the tissue to scar.

HOW PRP CAN HELP TREAT ACNE SCARS

PRP injections are a safe and efficient way of providing a fresh, radiant and youthful look without the need for surgery. Thus making this an excellent treatment for acne scars. The fact that the platelet-rich plasma is derived from your own blood supply makes it an effective procedure without the risk of side effects or rejection from your body.

PRP is a natural treatment that doesn’t require artificial fillers or chemicals. It contains growth factors and stem cells which stimulate the production of new collagen and elastin, helping to reduce the appearance of scars, leaving you with permanently brighter and smoother skin.

Improvements to your skin should be noticed within the first few weeks of receiving the treatment as the collagen and elastin start to restore.  The skin will appear plumper with the appearance of scars beginning to diminish.

In addition PRP can also prevent fresh breakouts, due to the therapy helping to stimulate the flow of blood and oxygen in the body which work to remove the build-up of toxins.

The procedure:

  • A numbing agent will be applied to the treatment area.
  • A small amount of blood will be drawn from your arm.
  • The blood is then placed into a machine that spins the blood at high speeds separating it into different layers: red blood cells and white blood cells
  • A second layer of spinning is done to remove the red and white blood cells leaving a serum containing platelets, growth and healing components.
  • This is then prepared for injection into the skin.

HOW LONG IS THE PROCEDURE?

The procedure lasts anywhere from 5-20 minutes depending on the size of the surface area and the severity.

HOW MANY TREATMENTS WILL I NEED?

We typically recommend 3-4 sessions with 1-4 week intervals in between. However this will depend on the size of the surface area to be treated as well as the severity. Your doctor will be able to advise you upon your consultation.

IS THERE ANY DOWNTIME?

The simple answer is no. While there may be a slight amount of bruising and swelling around the treatment area you can continue with most day to day activities immediately afterwards.

We also recommend PRP treatments combined with microneedling to enhance the effects in conjunction with our iS Clinical skincare line for your day to day skincare regime. Learn more about PRP injections and cosmetic PRP therapy.

Nutrition for Acne

While food doesn’t directly cause pimples it can have an effect on your gut which in turn can cause imbalances. Port Moody Health is able to offer a full assessment and nutrition plan to get on track and help you better maintain your results.

Youthful Confidence Restored

A Canadian study of nearly 500 patients with acne, published in the British Journal of Dermatology, found that even having mild acne can evoke feelings of low self-esteem, depression and thoughts of self-harm. The fact that acne often coincides with the start of puberty adds to feelings of uncertainty about self-image and can contribute to emotional issues. [1].
